Halloween is coming up fast, and there is nothing better than watching scary movies to prep for one of the scariest days of the year. Here are a few movies that will put in the spirit of candy, trick-or-treaters, and jump scares.

1 ) In The Tall Grass

Netflix

The new movie, out on Netflix is based on the novel ‘In The Tall Grass’, written by Stephen King and Joe Hill. The film deals with a field of grass which draws in it’s victims through the voice of a loved one or a young boy looking for a way out. The thriller focuses on a, pregnant, sister and brother duo who go to help a young boy out of the grass, which they can’t seem to get out of either, and a mysterious rock in the center of it all. More disturbing and unsettling than stereotypically scary, the movie is worth watching during the Halloween season.

2 ) Hereditary

A24

With missing heads and creepy figures in ceiling corners, Hereditary is definitely not meant for the faint of heart. The film itself was filmed in Summit County, Utah, making the film possibly scarier for Juan Diego students as it takes place near us. Two hours may seem like a very long time to sit and watch one movie, but Hereditary makes it possible with sick twists and turns at each point in the movie. ‘Hereditary’ even has an unsettling soundtrack with songs that will send shivers through your entire body, as they connect to key moments in the strange film.

3 ) ‘It’ Series

Warner Bros. Pictures

The extremely popular movie series, ‘It’, with Pennywise the clown had to make an appearance on the list of scary movies to watch in the Halloween season. The original movie came out in theatres in 1990, then again in 2017, and again with ‘It Chapter Two’ releasing just this past September, clearly shows that fans enjoy the series, as the films are in high demand. The story follows a group of friends living in Derry, Maine, with their tormentor Pennywise, a clown who manages to know their darkest fears and uses them against the kids. Scary to some, and not to others, the movies have interesting plots and storylines that are worth the hours of watching.

4 ) Before I Wake

Netflix

Released in 2016, and found on Netflix, ‘Before I Wake,’ follows a couple who lost their son to cancer and welcome another young boy named Jessie into their home. Jessie however, has dreams, and nightmares, that come to life and terrorize the small family. With monsters like the ‘Canker Man’ and jump scares at every turn, the film follows a well organized plot and strangely insightful, meaning behind it all.

5 ) Lights Out

Warner Bros. Pictures

If you are looking to be scared and have a fear of the dark and everything that comes from it, watch ‘Lights Out.’ A young woman returns to her childhood home when her younger brother starts to experience the same terrors she did as a child, a fear of the dark. The young woman soon realizes that it wasn’t just her imagination, but a spirit, named Diana, who thrives off of darkness. Carvings in the wooden floor, and complete loss of power are just some of the tricks the monster plays on the house and the people in it. With only one true way to get rid of the spirit, you have to watch the thriller to find out.

Happy Halloween JD!
