Celebrating Swim State

Celebrating+Swim+State

The state swim meet was the last meet of the season, and the last meet of our seniors’ high school swimming careers. This meet was one of the utmost significant, with some of the best times and finest performances exhibited from the swim team. With a total of 22 swimmers, and 6 relays, this was one of the biggest teams Juan Diego had competing at a state swim meet. Both the boys and the girls were extremely successful this season, placing at state.

The girls team came a long way since last year, going from 4th to 2nd place. In their 200 medley, and 400 free relay, the girls team got first place. Senior swimmer Audrey Weller, stated that “it was a satisfying ending to the swim season, and also a lit relay.” The girls also managed to get seventh place in the 200 free relay.

The boys team was also extremely successful, coming in 3rd place two years in a row.  The men’s relay came in 3rd for the 200 free and in 5th for the 200 medley and 400 free. Swimmers were shocked with how fast they went and how far they had come. “Making State was such an incredible accomplishment my team made,” said junior Saxton McKnight. “The team and I worked all year to get to this point, and seeing people drop time was such an amazing experience.”

Swimming isn’t an easy sport. The team faced losses and wins, but had an amazing team to help each other through the season. Many individual swimmers accomplished personal achievements. Audrey Weller, who competed in the 200 individual medley, got first place in the 3A division. Isabella Hategan, a Junior, managed to get first place in the 100 backstroke medley.

The seniors of the swim team were very valuable to the success of the team. Julia Cunningham, a senior on the swim team, stated that “State was a really bittersweet moment for me.” She had “the best times in everything I swam, but the swimming career ending was the closest to a huge chapter in my life.” Saxton McKnight was thankful for the senior swimmers, stating that he was “happy that I got to share the victories and losses all along and that’s the beauty in swimming.” He is “sad to see the seniors go, but it made me really appreciate the time I had with each and everyone of them.” Many seniors enjoyed swimming, with Julia Cunningham saying that she “only [has] happy memories of state.”

Overall, state was one of the best experiences the swimming team has faced. The Swim coach, John Moran, took home coach of the year, further showing just how accomplished the swim team was. “This team has been one of the best parts about high school,” states Thais Tosolini, a senior on the swim state. “We are all like a family to each other, and the family will continue on after swim.”
