Bon Iver’s new album “i,i” released two months ago has mood and symbolism not before heard in his previous albums. This album is entirely creative and original, like all of Bon Iver’s music. You can listen to this album no matter what mood you are in. If you are happy then “i,i” will keep you content, while if you are sad, this same album will help you feel those feelings. It is much more alternative than his previous albums, with the exclusion of “22, A Million.. It feels like the peak of his life, and you get a sense of looking back and respect for what he has accomplished.

The first song “Yi,” is a 3o second intro that is the perfect preface to what the album will entail, showing off his style of composition and detail. It is a chaotic song, with experimental string music in the background. It builds suspense for the listener and creates a feeling of excitement as you are not quite sure what Bon Iver is going to throw at you. “Yi,” also leads perfectly into the next song “iMi,” showing off just how much this artist pays attention to detail.

An intermittent song “Hey, Ma,” is in classic Bon Iver style, set in the middle of the album. This song is both uplifting but solemn, reflecting on his mother’s presence in how she has influenced him through every stage of his life. Bon Iver uses a line “Tokin’ on Dope,” which by any other artist would be an ode to self harm and dissentient, while when used by him it is simply a confession. “Hey, Ma,” is inspiring and magnetic as it urges you to reflect on your own mother’s presence and just how influential a motherly figure is in your life.

Finally, the concluding song on “i,i,” called “RABi,” is a beautiful closer, reflecting on religion and Bon Iver’s stance on his own faith. This song includes peaceful strumming when explaining how the human race is generally scared of death as a whole. However, when the song progresses it shows just how much you grow as a person and feel relief and love when you inch closer to the end. Although it is a somewhat hard topic of death, Bon Iver manages to beautifully create a story of comfort and relaxation as you realize just how much you can ease up when you put your life in the hands of God.

Overall, I think “i,i” is Bon Iver’s best album yet. Not only does it leave your ears satisfied and your brain relaxed, it also leaves listeners with a sense of accomplishment and reflection. This artist has a beautiful capability of simply “creating”. He is able to make music that is completely original, but not too alternative. If you need a listen, I highly recommend Bon Iver’s “i,i” to absolutely anyone.
