Juan Diego softball has high hopes for the season and has been working hard to make it to state this year. They’re off to a great start with a 2-1 record, beating Ogden in their regional game, as well as their rivals at Judge. “Unfortunately, our first game was rough… We lost to Tooele but we did beat Judge 6-3 and Ogden 10-3,” said senior Sara Burns, one of the team’s captains.

Coach Paige Cruz says that the team has more chemistry than she’s seen in past years and that they “seem to work well together and are all dedicated to the same goal”. This has no doubt contributed to the team’s success in the beginning of their season. “The upperclassmen have stepped up a great deal in that they have really worked towards team unity. We have eight seniors and they have done an amazing job working together to help build this team,” Cruz added.

“Over the years, the team has grown closer as a family. We aren’t state champions, but we are very close. This sort of bond doesn’t just appear out of nowhere. It grows over the years because we created a welcoming environment that people can feel comfortable in,” said senior and captain, Aaliyah Bass.

Of the eight seniors on the team, Bass, who has accepted a college softball scholarship to Doane College in Crete, Nebraska, plays as the Varsity pitcher. “In both wins we were able to hold the team to three runs. This is a big part due to Aaliyah’s accurate pitches,” Coach Penny Hietala said, “On the year, she pitched 11 strikeouts and she is batting .500.”

After starting off on such a great foot, the team has their goals in sight and is sure to continue to improve and perform well throughout the season. “I look forward to getting to know all the girls more, being able to make some life long friends and maybe being able to make it to state,” Burns said.
