Homecoming Heartbreaker

JD falls to North Sanpete at homecoming, 17-14.

The Juan Diego Eagles played against the North Sanpete Hawks Friday, September 14th in a regular 3A season game. The Eagles were the heavy favorites coming into the game, the last result between both teams being 36-0 in the Eagle’s favor. They were also playing in their Homecoming game with a big crowd in attendance, so the Eagle were going into their biggest game of the season so far.

Juan Diego came into the game with a strong start, with Tristan Tonozzi running through North Sanpete’s defense for an 82-yard touchdown with 3:07 remaining in the first quarter. The PAT from Jaron Adams put them up 7-0. The Eagles slowed down in the second quarter, though, allowing Chance Clawson a rushing touchdown, as well as a field goal and PAT from Luis Rodriguez. The first half ended 10-7 with North Sanpete leading.

Starting the second half, no points were scored until very late in the quarter, when Tristan Tonozzi rushed for another touchdown, this one being for 50 yards. Another successful PAT from Jaron Adams gave the Eagles a four-point lead, going into the fourth quarter with momentum, but a small lead.

North Sanpete came out ready to play late-game against a confident Juan Diego. After shutting down their offense, Chance Clawson threw to Jaxton Langschwager for a 30-yard touchdown with five minutes remaining. Another PAT from Luis Rodriguez put the Hawks up by three points. Juan Diego did everything in their power to come back, but solid defense prevented them from scoring and the game ended Juan Diego 14 North Sanpete 17.

The Eagles are now down 2-3. The Hawks are the mirror image, currently 3-2. Juan Diego’s next game is a home game against Richfield, who are currently 4-1.
