Sticky Spray Tans

A beginners guide to fake tans.

There are two types of people in this world, those who get spray tans, and those who know nothing about them. If you know nothing about spray tans then, let this article be your guide into the very specific and interesting world of spray tans.

There are three options when getting an artificial tan. You can get an airbrush tan, my personal favorite. When you get airbrushed you go into a room and have someone spray the tan on you. You can also spray in a machine. The last option is self tanner. With airbrush you are sure to have an even, opaque tan. They come out a lot darker than the other two options which can cause you to look orange. If you’re wanting a big color change though, airbrush is your best bet for pigmentation. When spraying in the machine you have to turn and position yourself. If you don’t turn right or position right you will not get an even tan. You also are standing on a floor covered in spray tan, which makes the bottoms of your feet nearly black. When using self tanner, you want to use a glove so your hands don’t turn orange. Also, you have to blend out the tanner quickly or you will have dark spots. Self tanner is the cheapest option for artificial tans.

When preparing to get a spray tan or to self tan, you must exfoliate and shave. If you miss a spot while shaving the spray tan will stick to your hairs and it will look like you still have hairs after you shave. After tanning, I suggest leaving the tan on for at least 12 hours to let the color absorb into your skin. I usually wait 24 hours to shower, though.

There are specific lotions and body washes you can buy to make your tan last longer. They are your best option if you are trying to keep your tan for a while. If your tan is too dark or orange, exfoliate first and try to take off excess pigmentation. If that doesn’t work use a body oil and let that take some of it off. Be careful though, because your tan will fade pretty quickly.

Here’s a list of things not to do while you’re spray tanning. Make sure you turn around and definitely don’t stand in place or you’ll end up like Ross from Friends. If you’re feeling emotional, don’t get a spray tan. If you cry after a spray tan you’ll get white streaks down your face and ruin your tan. Also, don’t go too dark hoping that you’ll look very different, because you won’t, unless you’re wanting to look like an oompa loompa.

Spray tans can easily be viewed as fake or extra, but when you know more about them it makes it easier to understand the people who get them. I would recommend for everyone to go and get a spray tan. They’re temporary, and if you don’t like it, it’ll fade away. If you do like it, it’ll be the best decision of your life.
